Ornamental grasses are under-planted. The reason for this is often that they don’t always look spectacular when purchased. People prefer to buy plants with flowers, and with grasses you have to wait until autumn.
But an advantage is that the grasses in autumn give a beautiful view of the borders and many grasses are still beautiful in winter. Take the sprinkle pipe or Molinia. This grass also grows wild in acid bogs, but also thrives in the garden. Cultivated forms sometimes reach 2 meters in height, but they are never invasive with their aerial plumes.

Molinia ‘Heidebraut’ also grows in the shade and has a nice winter silhouette. Molinia ‘Moorhexe’ is recommended for small gardens, it does not grow very tall (60-80 cm) and has almost black flowering stems that stand upright. Molinia ‘Variegata’ has variegated leaves with yellow flower stalks and dark spikes, the plant is 60cm tall. In the Netherlands, landscape architect Piet Oudolf is known for his grass borders and wrote a wonderful book on ornamental grasses with Michael King.
