Wikipedia Luis Suarez Miramontes, Luis Suárez Miramontes, better known as Luis Suárez (A Coruña, Galicia, May 2, 1935 – Milan, Italy, July 9, 2023), was a Spanish footballer and coach. He has been recognized as one of the greatest figures in Spanish football of the 20th century. He won the Ballon d’Or in 1960 and the Ballon d’Argent in 1961 and 1964.
He started his career at Deportivo de La Coruña, where he played as a left midfielder. In 1954 he was signed by FC Barcelona, where he played for seven seasons and won the Spanish League twice, the Copa del Rey twice and the Intercity Fairs Cup twice. In 1961, he was one of the first Spaniards to sign for a foreign club, Inter Milan. It was the most expensive transfer in football history at the time. He had a productive career, winning two European Cups (1964 and 1965) and three Serie A titles in nine seasons. Between 1970 and 1973 he played for UC Sampdoria, ending his career at the age of 38.
At international level, he was called up 32 times for the Spanish national team, scoring fourteen goals. He was part of the team that won the European title in 1964 and played in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups.

After his playing career, he moved to Italy as a coach, where he coached several Serie A clubs. In 1978, he returned to Spain to manage Deportivo de La Coruña. The following year, he was hired by the Royal Spanish Football Federation: he was technical director of the youth teams from 1980 to 1988, won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 1986, and coach of the national team from 1988 to 1991.
Luis Suarez is the first Spaniard to win the Ballon d’Or. For 61 years he was the only Spaniard to achieve this, until Alexia Putellas’ victory in the women’s category in 2021.
